What is Prescribe?
Prescribe is a page description language developed by Kyocera-Mita. It was developed as a competitor to HP's Page Control Language (PCL). HP's language developed into a de-facto industry-wide standard format, whereas Prescribe remained a niche player. Whereas PCL is supported by most printers on the market, Prescribe is supported only by printers from Kyocera-Mita themselves.
What does Prescribe look like?
It's actually a lot easier to read than HP PCL. Prescribe is a purely ASCII language, meaning you can edit it in a text editor, and display it in web pages.
Here's an example:
!R! UNIT I; MZP 3, 3;
TEXT "This text will appear 3 inches to the right and 3 inches down from the top left zero position";
PAGE; EXIT;
Like PCL, Prescribe has commands to place the cursor on the page, define page attributes like the margins and draw lines, text and bitmaps.
How does the WML Prescribe Emulation work?
Our emulation parses the Prescribe data, page by page, determining where each image and piece of text should be placed. It renders each page into PDF objects and builds up a complete PDF document, optionally merging in forms data from other PDF files.
