Instructions for upgrading your WML Linux Thin Client

Applying an Upgrade

To upgrade the firmware image on your WML Linux Thin Client, you load the image on a 128 MB+ USB storage device, plug this into your thin client and then upgrade from the Foundry Linux Setup Manager.

Detailed instructions

  1. Download the firmware image, using the link in the firmware release email sent to you. Image files are of the form st166wml64-20061127_1452.img where the "st166" refers to the hardware platform, "wml" to the branding of the OS and "64" to the size of the onboard flash Disk On Module drive. The following numbers are a datestamp for the firmware and the ".img" suffix notes that it is an image. The image is in fact a tar archive, but you should not unarchive the file before beginning the upgrade process. This is carried out automatically by the thin client.
  2. Optionally check the integrity of the download using the md5sum, which can be downloaded from the same location as the firmware image.
  3. Take a USB storage device, such as a USB pendrive which is at least 128 MB in size. Make sure this is formatted with a single primary partition containing the Windows FAT32 filesystem, known as VFAT to Linux users. Copy the firmware image onto the drive. If you have any other files on the drive, make sure they are small; the upgrade process will need 16 MB of space in addition to the firmware image.
  4. Insert the USB drive into your WML Linux Thin Client. Shut down any running connections as the upgrade process will reboot the client.
  5. Press F2 to launch the Setup Manager. Note that if there are any running connections, F2 will not launch the setup manager; shut down the connection or use the button on the Configuration tab of the Connection Manager.
  6. Select the "Firmware" tab in the Setup Manager
  7. Press the "Refresh" button to seach for a firmware image on the USB drive.
  8. Now press the "Upgrade" button, then confirm that you want to upgrade and reboot.
